Description

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Gordon & MacPhail 70cl / 46%

Speyburn, despite its unglamorous (and occasionally humorous) reputation, produces some terrific easydrinking and often refreshingly old-fashioned (in a good way) Speyside single malt whisky.

This 2009 Speyburn has been bottled as an 11-year-old by Gordon & MacPhail for their Connoisseurs Choice series from a single first fill sherry butt that yielded a seriously impressive 921 bottles at 46%.

Cracking dram at a great price

Having not tried a Speyburn whisky on my journey thus far, this bottling from the masters of malt maturation at Gordon and Macphail looked like an excellent opportunity to sample this distillery's output. Having been matured in a first fill sherry butt, the whisky has a wonderfully fruity character, with an amalgamation of mince pie and stewed orchard fruits dominating the initial taste profile. Surprisingly despite this sherried fruit package, as indicated on the tasting notes, there is a white pepper 'hit' that accompanies the finish. A very good introduction to Speyburn, and the G&M maturation makes this a cracker.
