Bruichladdich 1986-1996 Scott's Selection

A young Bruichladdich 1986 bottled by Scott's Selection in 1996 at its potent cask strength of 57.2%, coincidentally the same as the old Imperial 100-proof. Young cask strength Bruichladdichs from this era are generally firm and nervous initially but open up beautifully with water, revealing a lemony austerity balanced by sweet patisserie notes.

Bruichladdich was not in great shape in 1986 when this whisky was distilled - production at the distillery had been cut back sharply in 1983 by owners Invergordon, and the stills were run only intermittently before the arrival of Murray McDavid in 2000.

What's remarkable is that the quality of the spirit made in the 1980s and early 1990s - by which time the distillery was extremely dilapidated - was almost without exception some of the finest, cleanest Bruichladdich whisky ever made. This Scott's Selection single cask should be cracking stuff.
