Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Bottled by: Gordon & MacPhail 70cl / 60.7%
A marvellous old bottle of Port Ellen 1979 20-year-old Islay single malt whisky bottled at full strength in 2000 by Gordon & MacPhail for their Cask Strength series.
This 20-year-old Port Ellen 1979 was a micro-batch vatting of two sister casks of the 1979 vintage bottled at its extraordinarily potent natural cask strength of 60.7%. A wonderful symphony of grassy, floral notes, engine oil, soot, soil, citrus, saline, woodsmoke, wet sand and green apple peel with an exquisitely austere, blade-like minerally kick, this is a classic example of late-70s PE at its most magnificent.

This is a heavily sherried dram that tastes of dates and raisins with a touch of honey and vanilla. It’s pretty soft and smooth without water but a few drops seem to thicken it up slightly and add hints of caramel. Absolutely gorgeous.
