Born and bred in Glasgow, Loch Lomond Group brand ambassador Gary Mills has been working in the drinks industry for many years.
Working for one of Scotland’s leading independent distillers, Gary promotes the group’s malt portfolio: Loch Lomond, Glen Scotia and Littlemill. While his job takes him all over the world, he mostly splits his time between the Loch Lomond Distillery, the modern-day home of Littlemill and Campbeltown where Glen Scotia is based. Gary recently oversaw a project to trace the fascinating history of Littlemill which uncovered documentary evidence proving it was the oldest licensed whisky distillery in Scotland.
Before taking up his current role with Loch Lomond Group, Gary worked across various industries, from beauty to FMCG and the auto trade. He graduated from Strathclyde University with an Honours in marketing in 2004.
His favourite dram is Glen Scotia 15 year old, which he describes as “Campbeltown in a glass” while his preferred whisky bar is the Ardshiel Hotel – home to over 300 malt whiskies and winner of Scotland’s Best Whisky Bar.
So, another tasting and this time with a range of 7 drams from the Loch Lomond distillery, based in Alexandria, neat the southern tip of the Loch itself. Gary Mills and Dan Fleet from the distillery took us on a great virtual tour with presentations and narrative about the history of the distillery, they different types of stills that it operates and the preferred woods that are used for maturation amongst other topics, which was a great opportunity to learn some rather fascinating things. The distillery also operates its own cooperage which rejuvenates their casks, something that the hosts demonstrated a great degree of pride in.
The tasting itself was comprehensive starting with a peated single grain whisky that was predominantly fruity despite being peated to 50ppm. Next up was the 12 year old perfectly balanced, which is a very smooth whisky with a honeyed sweetness characteristic from a dozen years in american ex-bourbon oak. 12 year old Inchmurrin followed, which is unpeated and was very orchard fruit-laden with apples and pears aplenty, great legs and mouthfeel indicating plenty of natural oils and esters. The 12 year old Inchmoan is lightly peated, with a degree of complexity arriving when a drop of water was added that structured the taste profile of the dram very well. The age profile increased next, with a cracking 14 year old which was the first whisky of the evening that had been finished - in oak casks from Limousin in France - following 12 years in ex-bourbon oak. This finishing increased the level of complexity within the taste profile of the dram, which was remarkably good. The first 5 whiskies were all bottled at 46% ABV.
A couple of specials then followed - a 21 year old, also 46% ABV, fully matured in ex-bourbon american oak, with some hints of coconut, honey sweetness and an incredibly rich tasting experience across the palate and finish - followed by a 20 year old Royal St Georges bottling which had been matured in virgin English oak and had been bottled at 50.2% ABV and exhibited caramel, fruit, oak spices and a clove/ginger note across its profile.
In conclusion, the tasting was comprehensive, covering a range of styles and ages, and was excellent value for the price. The sale prices of the bottles tasted provide some of the best value for money currently available, especially the first 5 bottles, and this opportunity to taste the range was very worthwhile.

2 bottles of this lovely single malt were bought as gifts. Sampled a couple of drams from one bottle and it went well above expectations. The quality, integrity, natural colour, cask strength ABV and value-for-money made these bottles 'no-brainers'.
Present us with more of these quality bottles at fair prices...and we'll buy more.
This is a heavily sherried dram that tastes of dates and raisins with a touch of honey and vanilla. It’s pretty soft and smooth without water but a few drops seem to thicken it up slightly and add hints of caramel. Absolutely gorgeous.
