Being something of a traditionalist I have never ventured into Scandinavian territory with my whisky, however upon being presented with the opportunity to taste a range from Stauning in Denmark the only words that came to mind were "why not?".
The tasting talk was provided by Jonas Stengaard Jensen, who was a very proud employee of the Stauning distillery and his passion for what he does was very evident in his delivery. We sampled 5 drams, each one developing on the last one from a rye whisky first, through the hilariously named "Bastard" (cue chat notes about walking into a bar ordering a couple of large bastards), El Classico, Kaos (Triple Malt) and Smoke. The smoke notes in the latter two whiskies were derived from the use of dried heather burnt with peat - the distillery is very mindful of its ecological footprint and digging up peats doesn't meet their carbon footprint targets. This provided a herbal note which complemented the peat notes well. The whiskies were all excellent and it was difficult to pick a favourite - the B'stard and El Classico (finished in Mezcal and Vermouth casks, respectively) were classy, the Kaos and Smoke rich, and the Rye spicy from a 60% rye content and virgin oak maturation.
The absolute highlight of this tasting was a virtual tour performed, right from the malting floors through every step to the maturation warehouse, technology enabled us to see the whole distillery. Jonas displayed his passion for what he does once again by showing us his bicycle, which had the words "I make whisky for a living" written on one side and the 'Stauning' logo on the other - pretty cool that! An absolutely brilliant evening.

Stauning V-Tasting & Tour
Excellent - I have lost count of how many of these virtual tours I have done as arranged by Tim and they have all been good, but this one was outstanding and stood head and shoulders above the others.
I am a whisky nut and love all aspects of the art, but Jonas Stengaard Jensen brought the Stauning range and the operations of this unique distillery to life, and I was totally hooked, in particular with the El Clasico 5*

An interesting new experience
There wasn't a poor whisky in the 5 we tried. The Rye was a pleasant start and apart from the second one which I personally thought wasn't as good each new whisky was a step up culminating in the final offering SMOKE which was my favourite. For Whiskies ranging from 3 to 7 year old they were surprisingly mature.
The presentation and impromtu tour in the dark was outstanding.

2 bottles of this lovely single malt were bought as gifts. Sampled a couple of drams from one bottle and it went well above expectations. The quality, integrity, natural colour, cask strength ABV and value-for-money made these bottles 'no-brainers'.
Present us with more of these quality bottles at fair prices...and we'll buy more.
This is a heavily sherried dram that tastes of dates and raisins with a touch of honey and vanilla. It’s pretty soft and smooth without water but a few drops seem to thicken it up slightly and add hints of caramel. Absolutely gorgeous.
