A 12-year-old Ardbeg from indie bottlers Darkness, who've finished it in a small batch of their hand-coopered Oloroso sherry octaves, with an outturn of just under 250 half-litre (50cl) bottles at 48.5%.
Sherry octave casks impart a great deal of flavour in a short amount of time because of their small size and high surface area to volume ratio, so expect a pimped-up combination of Ardbeg's classic Islay sooty phenols and Oloroso's fruit ' n' nut sherry style.

Nose: Woody and aromatic, floral, honeyed brioche, dense smoke, salty licorice and lime. Enormous!
Palate: Melon, bonfire of cedar and pine, spice, whipped cream and smoke throughout.
Finish: Walnuts, pink grapefruit and peat. Oak, custard and cream, endlessly complex.

This is a heavily sherried dram that tastes of dates and raisins with a touch of honey and vanilla. It’s pretty soft and smooth without water but a few drops seem to thicken it up slightly and add hints of caramel. Absolutely gorgeous.
