Description

Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled By Elixir Distillers 70cl / 45.8%

A mystery Islay single malt, Port Askaig is named after the ferry and shipping port in the North West of Islay, close to the Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain distilleries, which for many people is the first place they see when arriving on whisky's most famous and beautiful island.

This 8-year-old Port Askaig is the youngest age statement in the series, and like the other Port Askaig whiskies, it comes from an unknown Islay distillery. A delicious, smoky malt that seems fully mature and with an impressive complexity for its age.

A very good introduction to Islay

A bottle purchased as part of my 'Islay journey', this one had me intrigued as the distiller of the spirit is not named. Having looked at Elixir's range it is evident that a lot of well-renowned distillers trust them, so I purchased this expecting something good. And it didn't disappoint. Pale in colour, having been bottled at a relatively young 8 years, but that is no indication of a 'pale' taste profile. The dram is quite refreshing overall (a good aperitif whisky), with the peat notes more evident in a phenolic manner (hence 4 star rating, my personal taste preference) as opposed to the smoky Lagavulin (see my review of the 8 year old). Water addition structures the dram somewhat, bringing out toffee and caramel notes on the palate, with the peat becoming more prominent in a long, pleasant finish. An enjoyable dram, and excellent value at the price.
