Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Bottled by: Douglas Laing 70cl / 40%
An old bottle of Port Ellen 12-year-old bottled at 40% by Douglas Murdoch in the early to mid 1990s. A subsidiary of the Campbell & Clark blending company, Douglas Murdoch was an unprolific bottler, but did release a trio of excellent young Port Ellens, all of which are justly famous.
Young Port Ellen is exceptionally rare as the distillery's stock was normally used only for blending, and by the time PE caught on as a single malt in the late 1990s / early 2000s the distillery had been closed for nearly twenty years. This terrific 12-year-old Port Ellen from Douglas Murdoch is a delightful dram, with citrus, creamy exotic fruit hints and restrained phenols all giving a remarkable flavour intensity for the strength.

This is a heavily sherried dram that tastes of dates and raisins with a touch of honey and vanilla. It’s pretty soft and smooth without water but a few drops seem to thicken it up slightly and add hints of caramel. Absolutely gorgeous.
