This 2007 Glen Elgin 15-year-old was finished in a hogshead cask 807411 that originally held delicious French sweet wine Sauternes, and yielded 262 bottles at a sturdy natural cask strength of 55.4%. The contrast between Glen Elgin's robust spirit and Sauternes' richly-flavoured, gossamer elegance should make this a fascinating and delicious dram.

Colour: Golden straw.
Nose: Sweet - brandy snaps and peanut brittle. Nutty and aldehydic - sugared almonds and pistachios.
Palate: Deep underlying honeycomb. Delivers those big orchard fruit notes that Sauternes has in its armoury - stewed apricots, raisins and apple strudel. Dusted with brown sugars, which should offer some satisfaction. An oasis of spices towards the end – pepper definitely; maybe cinnamon. Nicely poised.

This is a fabulous bottle of whisky. With a little water it drinks superbly. Great sherry finish. Rich and lovely mouth feel. Even at full strength it’s quaffable. Great value for money. I’ve been recommending it to all my friends who all agree it’s a great whisky.
