Torabhaig’s Legacy Series Inaugural Release sold out pretty sharpish, so we’re delighted to announce the imminent arrival of their second general release single malt whisky: Torabhaig Legacy Series Allt Gleann.
Housed in a painstakingly converted farmstead about 40 miles from Talisker, Torabhaig is only the second legal distillery on the Isle of Skye, and like their neighbours they’re making peated whisky. Torabhaig began distilling in January 2017 and have created a signature style they call Well Tempered Peat - so although their barley is heavily peated, Torabhaig whisky isn’t just a one-dimensional smokebomb.
Torabhaig's freedom to explore its own developing character is a function of its independence - the distillery is privately owned and operated by Mossburn Distillers, an independent distillation, blending and bottling company run by the team behind Marussia Beverages, one of the UK’s best drinks agencies.
Torabhaig Allt Gleann is the second in a series of four planned Legacy Series releases tracking the distillery’s progress. The Legacy Series is expected to take us up to 2028, when the first Torabhaig 10-year-old single malt is scheduled to appear.
The Legacy Series itself is destined to function not only as Torabhaig’s journey to full maturity, but also as an ongoing evolution of the distillery’s Well Tempered Peat signature style: an exploration of the myriad facets and nuances of character that peated barley can bring to single malt whisky.
Torabhaig Legacy Series Allt Gleann is the second step on that journey. Named after one of the two small burns that provide the distillery with its water, Allt Gleann is the first stage of progression from the Legacy Series’ Inaugural Release, tweaking the style slightly with a higher initial phenolicity of 77ppm and a residual 17ppm.
This forthcoming first batch of Torabhaig Allt Gleann is from first fill bourbon and refill whisky casks and is bottled at 46% without colouring or chill-filtration. The Inaugural Release Torabhaig was one of the best new whiskies we've tried for some time, so we'll be following this series very closely.
The current projections are for between four and six limited batches of Torabhaig Allt Gleann between now and 2022 or 2023, with the first release expected in mid-July and each bottling limited to no more than 30 casks - with a production capacity of just half a million litres per annum, Torabhaig's maturing stock is being carefully stewarded to ensure sufficient supply for future releases.
Torabhaig Legacy Series Allt Gleann will be one of this summer’s most highly sought-after whiskies, and our allocation will therefore be exclusive to our VIP Club members only. If you’re not a VIP member yet, don’t worry - there’s still plenty of time to join the Club.
